CPT stands for Current Procedural Terminology. CPT Codes (always 5 digits) are used primarily to identify medical services and procedures furnished by qualified healthcare professionals.

CPT codes are sometimes referred to as a "Service Codes" on superbills.

The responsibility to update or modify code descriptors, coding rules, and guidelines for the CPT code set lies with the AMA CPT Editorial Panel, authorized by the AMA Board of Trustees and they are updated annually.

CPT codes can be augmented via "modifiers," which indicate that the treatment was altered by some specific circumstance, when that circumstance is not defined by a different code, and are common with certain types of treatments, like telehealth visits (modifier "95").
